Donovan’s First Baseball Game

Donovan decided this Spring to play a new sport…Tee ball. He was very excited when we took him to Dick’s to get a new glove, cleats, and a batting helmet. He wasn’t sure what any of that equipment was for but he was just excited to be getting shiny new things.
He has been to a few practices and we found out that we were the Colorado Rockies. Aaron was just happy that if we weren’t the Yankees then we couldn’t be the Red Sox, or Tampa Bay, Toronto, Baltimore, or the Angels. He was satisfied with a NL team. Anyway, our coach (who’s name is also Shannon), told us that she figured we would be a “girlie” color considering that she is the only female coach. Donovan doesn’t mind the purple at all. In fact, he thought that is was a very pretty color and was glad he wasn’t on the black team (the white sox).

Our first game was today! We arrived to the field without Dono’s uniform because we had missed the previous practice due to our visit to California. Aaron helped Donovan get dressed and then he was out in the field warming up with his teammates. The Rockies were in the field first and Donovan was Third base. He actual did a very nice job and no balls got past him. But I don’t think any balls got to him so that’s probably why. Once all their players batted they ran to the dugout for their turn. They bat in the order of their uniform number so Donovan was ninth. He hit off the coach and we were so thrilled! It must have been all that practicing with his Daddy in the backyard and at the beach with Uncles Chad and Chris, and Papa. The next inning Donovan played Short Stop and this time he stopped a few grounders and threw them to the coach. His only complaint was that he was starting to get hot and needed a drink.

Second time up for Dono was just like the first only this time he hit clear to the grass. He was grinning from ear to ear and even stopped for a photo op once he touched home plate.

His final position was First base which was really fun to watch because the kids were told to throw the ball to Donovan once the get it. A few kids got it to him but one was right next to Dono when he threw it and barely missed Donovan’s head when he threw it as hard as he could. When Donovan came into the dugout, he said “ok, I’m tired and I want my snack.” I told him that he still had to bat one more time and he took his hat off and lied down on the dugout bench with his feet up and put his hat over his face and crossed his arms. “That’s ok, I’m too tired.”

But we wouldn’t let him skip his turn so he got up and dragged his bat to the warm up circle and he stared into the dirt until Aaron told him it was his turn and to stand next to plate. Apparently he was too tired to lift his bat or stand sideways at the plate so we missed all his pitches from the coach. He was about to walk to the dugout when they got out the tee for him. He let out a HUGE sigh and chopped at the ball. It barely made it to the pitcher’s mound and he ran, well no, he skipped to first base. Once he got to home plate he took his helmet off and ran to me for his snack.
Only 8 more games to go and maybe next time he will have enough stamina to actually finish all three innings. We are so proud of him and can’t wait for more games to come.
